As I got up at 5 am to get ready for my morning routine followed by my workout, I cast my thoughts back onto something one of my clients had asked me the previous day.
“But how do you get up early, go and exercise then keep yourself focused on the business tasks at hand throughout the day? How do you maintain that consistency, that mindset each day, without falling off the wagon or giving in to excuses, simply caving in saying, “You’ll do it another day, one day perhaps, but not today”?
“Oh that’s easy!” I replied, smiling to myself. “You have to want it so badly, be so hungry for it that you are willing to do WHATEVER IT TAKES. You have to be willing to step outside your comfort zone and get comfortable with being uncomfortable. That’s it really. It’s a piece of cake!”
The truth of the matter is most people don’t want things that badly or even if they do they’re not willing to step beyond where their comfort zone ends to see what is even possible outside of it.
Success begins where your comfort zone ends. When you are willing to go that extra mile, climb further up that hill way past what you have ever seen before, where you step into the unknown and the unknowable into the field of infinite possibilities. For it is only when you arrive here that indeed ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
Otherwise you are left with comfortable mediocrity. I don’t know about you, but comfortable mediocrity is even more uncomfortable than being outside my comfort zone. Walking around in a somnambulistic “dead zone” like an aimless sheep somehow has never really appealed to me. Perhaps it’s safe but it is also a dead end and not conducive to living life to the fullest.
Well what’s the solution? Get out of your own way and be willing to get a little uncomfortable from time to time. When you first start this practice you might spend most of your time being uncomfortable, but guess what? It’s only you that’s making it uncomfortable in the first place! That’s right! You’re the one that makes up the judgment that something is comfortable or not, good or bad, easy or hard, scary or fun. Just alter your perspective a little and track the changes.
The world won’t come to an end if you test out a new business system or strategy or take on board joint venture partners that leverage your capabilities and take your business to the next level.
No one ever died of walking past an extra piece of cake and not eating it. You won’t melt if you go walking or running in the rain. You won’t be struck by lightning if you smile at someone and pay them a compliment or do them a good deed.
No one ever got wealthy by staying stuck with their head buried in the sand waiting for the discomfort to leave. On the contrary, it is not until you are in that place of discomfort that you find the resources deep within you to do something extraordinary.
For one week practice stepping outside your comfort zone and notice what happens. At the end of that 7 day period, extend it by another one, then keep repeating this, till eventually it becomes part of who you are. Being uncomfortable is part of life. When you are open to what is available all around you, you can simply change your focus, change your awareness and have your attention now firmly planted onto the opportunities that are available instead. Opportunities lie beyond where your comfort zone ends.
I’ll see you out there!
